How to Softmod Your Xbox
Gaming Hacks, Xbox Mods, Softmodding, How To Guides February 7th, 2006
Now you will no longer have to buy a modchip, grab a screwdriver, and heat up a soldering iron to mod your Xbox. No, my friend, welcome to the world of Softmodding. Softmodding the Xbox will either prove to be extremely simple or one of the most frustrating processes imaginable depending on your attention to detail. As you may have read previously, I softmodded my Xbox with no problems, and I have since upgraded the Hard Drive with ease. The only difficulty I faced was the fact that it was possible for to me to ruin a priceless gaming gem in one simple process, only to be faced with the dreaded “$150.00 Oversized Paperweight.” A scary moment indeed. Now, Althack will show you how to Softmod your Xbox with a Precise Tutorial and far less worry.
Disclaimer - READ THIS FIRST
The owners, members, internet hosting provider, and affiliates of AltHack cannot be held responsible for damage or the corruption of your Xbox or other equipment involved in the following tutorial. You understand by using this tutorial that you are taking a risk of your Xbox ceasing to function (especially if you don’t follow this right). In other words, if you break your Xbox you can’t blame us. If you don’t agree with this, don’t mod your Xbox, plain and simple.
Items Needed
- This Guide
- Xbox w/ an Xbox Live Tab on the Dashboard (if there’s no Live tab, see below)
- 007: Agent Under Fire game (NOT THE PLATINUM EDITION)
- Action Replay
- PC w/ USB Port (for Action Replay).
- Ldots ltools Package v1.7.5 (Save Game Exploit)
1.0 - Getting Started
Some may think that using a ModChip might be cheaper, but that’s not really true. I bought 007: AUF for $8.00 and you can get the Action Replay for $30.00. That’s roughly $40.00 for everything, and plus you don’t have to crack open your Xbox. Sounds good doesn’t it? Alright, now that you have all the items necessary, it’s time to begin the Softmod.
1.1 - Installing the Xbox Live Tab
a) Boot up your Xbox
b) Check your Xbox Dashboard and see if you have the Xbox Live tab. (if so, skip to Section 2).

Xbox Live is Installed
c) If your system doesn’t have Xbox Live Installed, you must install it using an Xbox Live Enabled game.
Here’s A Few Xbox Live Enabled Games
Amped® 2
DRIV3R™
Fable™
Halo 2
Madden NFL 2005
Midnight Club II
Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell®
View Full List Of Xbox Live Enabled Games
1.2 - Checking the Xbox Kernel and Dashboard Versions
a) In the Xbox Dash, Goto Settings, Press A
b) Scroll through the settings until you highlight System Info. Press A.
c) Now you’ll see a long notice from Microsoft. Towards the bottom you’ll notice two numbers that are formatted like so:
K: 1.00.5713.01
D: 1.00.5659.03
d) Just write the above numbers down for future reference and double check that they are right. The number after K: is your Kernel version, and the number after D: is your Dashboard version. These numbers are important for the next steps of the SoftMod
1.3 - Find out your Xbox Version
Based on your Kernel Version (the number after the K:) you can determine what version of Xbox you own. For example, let’s use the above Kernel version to find out its Xbox version.
a) Extract the 3rd set of numbers which has four digits out of the Kernel Version. (In this case it’s 5713)
K: 1.00.5713.01
(this set of numbers can be the same as yours or different)
b) Compare the Kernel number with the following Table to see what your Xbox Version is.
| Xbox Version | Kernel Version (x.xx.XXXX.xx) |
| Xbox v1.0 | 3944 (usa only) , 4034 , 4036 , 4627 |
| Xbox v1.1 | 4817, 4972 |
| Xbox v1.2-1.5 | 5101, 5713 |
| Xbox v1.6 | 5838 |
Our example Kernel Version (5713) would show that it is Xbox V1.2-1.5
Before continuing, be sure to write down your Kernel Version, Dashboard Version, and your Xbox Version for future reference
1.4 - Turning Off High-Def Support
None of the tutorials online mentioned anything about turning off the HD support. This is one of the main reasons why my softmod didn’t work for awhile. So, if you have an HDTV follow the steps in this section. (If not, skip to Section 2.0)
a) Go to the Settings tab on your Xbox Dashboard. Press A
b) Scroll through the list until you find Video. Press A
c) Make sure 480p, 720p, and 1080i are all set to Off.
2.0 - Installing the Exploit
Now for the fun part, actually starting the main process of the Softmod. This section will show you how to prepare your Action Replay to receive the 007: Save Game Exploit. You have to delete everything on your Action Replay Memory Card in order for the 007: Save Game Exploit to fit on it (unless you have a version that’s larger than the standard 8mb, then it might fit with the rest of your saves). Then you must use the 007: AUF to make a saved game on your Action Replay Memory Card.
2.1 - Formatting Your Action Replay Memory Card
a) Load up your Action Replay software on your PC
b) Plug your Action Replay Memory Card into the USB Connector
c) Once it’s recognized, Right Click on your AR’s Name (mine is Memcard) then Click on Format
This will clear EVERYTHING on your AR so make sure you backup anything you intend to keep.

Before Format

After Format
2.2 - Making an “Agent Under Fire” Folder on your Action Replay
Some guides skip this step altogether, but I feel it’s important to follow just so the chances of getting a corrupt save are slimmer.
a) Plug your Action Replay into your Xbox Controller.
b) Load up 007: Agent Under Fire and start a New Game
c) When the game starts, just exit back to the Title Screen and you will see a Save Mission option.
d) Save your “progress” on the Action Replay (not your Hard Drive)
e) Load up your Action Replay software on your PC
f) Plug your Action Replay Memory Card into the USB Connector
g) Click the + beside the Agent Under Fire folder on your Memory Card. Right Click on the SaveDelete (DON’T DELETE THE AGENT UNDER FIRE FOLDER) that’s stored under it. Click

Keep your Action Replay software open for the next step.
2.3 - Copying the 007: Save Game Exploit to your Action Replay
a) Click Here Download the 007: Save Game Exploit
b) Save the .zip file to your Desktop
c) Now Drag and Drop the AgentUnder_BONDAUF.zip from your Desktop onto the Agent Under Fire folder on your Memory Card in the Action Replay software.

Your Action Replay is ready to Go!
2.4 - Copying the 007: Save Game Exploit to your Xbox Hard Drive
a) Hook up your Action Replay to your Xbox Controller and Turn It On
b) Go into the Memory Settings
c) You should see two options: Controller 1 and Xbox Hard Disk: Choose Hard Disk. Press A

d) Make sure there are no 007: Agent Under Fire Saves. If so, Delete them all.
e) Go back to the Memory settings and choose Controller 1
f) Copy the 007: Save to your Xbox Hard Disk

g) Go back to the main Dashboard
3.0 - Completing the Mod
Now it’s time to load the exploit. This is the most satisfying part of the tutorial, because soon you will be able to see unsigned code being ran on YOUR Xbox. It’s a warm fuzzy feeling.. XD.
3.1 - Loading the Exploit
a) Your Xbox should still be on from the last step.
b) Remove the Action Replay from your Controller.
c) Load up the 007: Agent Under Fire game in your Xbox
d) At the Main Screen of the Game: Choose Load Mission. Press A

e) Choose Hard Drive. Press A

f) If all goes right you’ll see the exploit in action.

3.2 - Installing UDE, BIOS Patcher, BIOS, and Dashboard
3.2.1 - Choosing the correct UDE for your Xbox
a) Now that the Exploit is running Press B. A menu should appear with the following options.

b) Choose UDE Install and Press A. You will see the following options appear.

IMPORTANT STEP. PAY ATTENTION
c) To figure out which UDE to install you NEED TO KNOW YOUR KERNEL VERSION (See Section 1.2)
- UDE 1: Is for Kernal Versions that are PRIOR to 5713 (If this describes your Kernel Press A)
- UDE 2: Is for Kernal Versions that are 5713 and HIGHER (If this describes your Kernel Press X)
UDE 2 is for USA and Canadian Xboxes ONLY, so if you bought your box in Britian or other areas DON’T use UDE 2
3.2.2 - Installing a Bios Loader/Patcher
a) After you choose a UDE you must choose a Bios Loader/Patcher.

b) Everyone that I know of chooses PBL Metoo (including myself), but if you prefer nkpatcher use it by all means.
- To Install PBL Metoo (Press A)
- To Install nkpatcher (Press X)
3.2.3 - Installing a Bios
a) To figure out which BIOS to install you MUST know your Xbox Version (Section 1.3)

- If your Xbox Version is 1.0 - 1.5 choose X2 (Press A)
- If your Xbox Versions is 1.6+ choose Evox M8 (Press X)
3.2.4 - Installing a Dashboard
I didn’t even include a screenshot for this, because this is definitely a matter of preference. I enjoy the features of EvolutionX so that’s the dashboard I choose. If you like MXM better, then install that Dash.
3.2.5 - Completing the Install
Right after you choose all these settings you’ll be presented with a Linux style screen.

DON’T TOUCH YOUR XBOX UNTIL PROMPTED
Once the install is completed you can then remove 007: Agent Under Fire and Restart your Xbox. You now have modded Xbox!!

After softmod, can your XBox play downloaded games that are burned?
March 16th, 2007 at 1:16 pm
Or can it play burned games at all?
March 16th, 2007 at 7:06 pm
Yes, your Xbox will have the same core functionality as those modded with a chip. This means you can play backups directly off your HD or backup media (depending on which kind of DVD drive is in your Xbox).. If your DVD is Samsung you shouldn’t have a problem.. However if it’s Philips or Toshiba you may consider buying a replacement DVD drive which costs about $80 on eBay…

Hey Zero:
Any ActionReplay should do the trick.
Also, if you don’t have an HDTV (or Component Cables) the HD option will not be available.
