How to FTP to Your Xbox
Gaming Hacks, Xbox Mods, Softmodding, How To Guides March 1st, 2006
Now that most of you have modded your Xboxes you must be wondering what to do next. Well before you can do much more you need to learn how to FTP to your Xbox.. So, in this article I will break down the steps involved in FTPing to your Xbox.
Things You Need
- Computer with an Ethernet Card and Windows
- Crossover Cable (sometimes referred to as an X-over Cable)
- A MODDED Xbox
- FTP Program (SmartFTP, CuteFTP, etc.)
- Some experience with Networking under a Windows Environment (not needed but highly recommended)
Before you Begin
Plug in the Crossover Cable to the back your Xbox and to the Ethernet Card on your Computer. Power ON your Xbox.
1.0 - Setting Up Your Window’s Networking Settings
If you are at all familiar with Window’s Networking this will be a breeze, but if you’re not, don’t worry, it’s not that bad.
1.1 - Opening your Network Connections
Click Start> Control Panel
Click Network and Internet Connections

Click Network Connections

Right Click on whichever Local Area Connection is connected to your Xbox.
Click Properties

1.2 - Configuring your TCP/IP Settings
Now that your Network Connection is open and ready to be edited all you have to do is plug in a couple numbers in the TCP/IP settings and you’re homefree..(well almost). Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Click the Properties button

Click on Use the following IP address and input the numbers as seen in the screenshot. NOTE: Write down ANY numbers that are already in place. These may be vital for you to connect to the Internet!

Click OK for each window Reboot your XBOX Now your TCP/IP settings are up and ready to go. Let’s configure SmartFTP to connect to your Xbox!
2.0 - Connecting to your Xbox with SmartFTP
For this tutorial (and my own personal preference) I’m using SmartFTP to connect to the Xbox. You can use any FTP program you are familiar with, but obviously the EXACT methods seen below won’t work. Make it easy on yourself and just use SmartFTP or just use the “concepts” displayed below.
2.1 Setting Up Your Xbox Account
Open SmartFTP and use the following settings:
![]()
IP: 192.168.0.3
Login: xbox
Password: xbox Port: 21
2.2 Connect to your Xbox
Press Connect ![]()
That should be it! You’ll see the directory structure of the Xbox….. More about that later today.
Troubleshooting
Q: My computer STILL won’t connect to my Xbox. What gives?
A: First, check all the numbers above (IP, Subnet, etc) and make sure you have them placed in the right spot. Also, the Firewall in Windows may pose a problem. Disable Firewall Protection in windows.
Q: My IP and Subnet are in the right spot, my Firewall is disabled, but still no luck.. Help?
A: Check to make sure the Crossover cable is connected properly to your Xbox and to your PC. There’s usually little flashing lights that indicate data transfer around the connector. If that looks good, Reboot your Xbox.
