Gaming Hacks, Xbox Mods, Softmodding, How To Guides March 7th, 2006
If you’re having problems finding software to run on your modded Xbox this guide is just for you. By using a service called Xbins you will have all the Media Players, Emulators, File Managers, Dashboards, etc. that you could ever want!
- mIRC (Download Now) http://www.mirc.com/get.html
- SmartFTP or any FTP Client (FlashFXP, CuteFTP, FileZilla, etc.)
- Some experience with mIRC is a plus so read up people
1.0 Xbins.org
Most homebrew developers for the Xbox feared releasing their software because it was created using the XDK (Xbox Development Kit). The use of XDK is highly illegal and thus the developers could be sued by the likes of Microsoft for using such a tool. This is why Xbins was created. They offered such developers a safe place to release their software for the Xbox to the general public. Check out their website for more details.
1.1 Connecting to the Xbins IRC Channel
1) Startup mIRC
2) Click the Options button

3) Enter a Full Name, Email Address, Nickname, and Alternative Nick (this information can all be fake as long as the email is in valid format
When you are finished, Click on the button with the Sun looking icon.

4) Use the following settings in the Servers Options

-
-
- IRC Network: ALL
-
- IRC Server: any EFNet server that is closest to your location. In my case it’s US, IL, Chicago.
When your settings are correct Press Connect To Server
5) Once you are connected to an EFNet server the mIRC Favorites dialog box will appear. Type #xbins and Press Join

1.2 Getting a User Name and Password for FTP Access
The whole point of getting into the #xbins IRC channel is to obtain a temporary FTP account in order to download Xbox Software from the Xbins FTP Server.
1) Once you’re in the #xbins channel read ALL the notices. This is important information, because if you misuse Xbins you will be banned! In the textbox at the bottom of the channel window Type /msg xbins !list and Press Enter

2) At the top of the Channel window you will notice a new button appear that is titled xbins with no # sign. Click on the newly formed xbins button.

3) In this window you will receive all the information you need to connect to Xbins FTP Server. The screenshot below highlights the information you will need from this window. (Don’t use what’s in the screenshot, because it has long since expired!) Write down the FTP ADDRESS, PORT, USER NAME, and PASSWORD for use in the upcoming steps.

4) Now that you have an account setup with Xbins you can now disconnect from mIRC and exit.

1.3 FTPing to Xbins
For this part of the tutorial I am using SmartFTP. You may use whatever FTP Client you are comfortable with, but SmartFTP and FlashFXP are the most recommended. Also, it’s VERY IMPORTANT to remember Xbins restrictions. Don’t be greedy! Each person can only download 30 files a day! If you break this rule you will be banned.
1) Open SmartFTP and Enter the Address, Port, User Name, and Password that Xbins provided and Press Connect.
2) Double Click on Xbox and then Double Click Apps. Download what you want!
