Guide to BitTorrent
How To Guides, Internet Hacks, BitTorrent March 13th, 2006
First off please let me say that if you have never heard of Bittorrents then, #1 you must be living under a rock, #2 have came to the right place. Althack will give you all you need to know about Bittorents so that you can get the goods to get the goods.
Althack is in no way shape or form responsible for any illegal downloading you might do. We only give you the information, what you do with it is your own thing. We will not be held responsible for anything that happens to you, if you are afraid of being caught then don’t do it.
Bittorrent is a protocol for sharing large files over the internet, (ex. Cds, large applications, games, and movies). For instance, lets say, I have a 1GB discography of Incubus and I want to share it, I could put it on a server and use a lot of bandwidth and eventually pay more money for doing so, or I could make a torrent and let everyone that downloads it help me distribute it to lessen the load.
How it works is you have seeders (people who have already downloaded the file completely), peers (people who are currently downloading the file) and leeches (people who are downloading the file and will remove the torrent after completed download, so no else can get the files from their computer). BTW a leech is something you don’t want to be but I will go into that later. Now peers and seeders help distribute the file to other people, think of it like Napster on steroids. So the big question is where do I start?
First off, you will need a bit client, this application helps receive and transmit the data so you can download from seeders and upload to leechers…I mean peers. Such programs are:
Bittorent windows, unix/linux
Azureus windows, mac , unix, linux
Bitcomet windows
Bit tornado windows
There are prolly dozens of more but this is what comes to mind when I think about torrent clients. So download a bit client and proceed to phase 2 which is finding websites that have torrents. Believe me it is not that hard, go to our old friend Google and type in torrent. Most likely you will find sites like torrentspy, torrentngenie, supertorrent, ect. ect, I personally recommend torrentspy b/c they have a large database of files and a user friendly webpage. Next download your torrent and open it with your bit client. Sit back and wait. Sometimes if a torrent does not have a lot of seeders or peers you might have to wait a while (ex it took me 5 days to download punk goes pop)
Some bit clients need to be port forwarded so that they can download faster or get through your firewall. If you need help with port forwarding, you can find it at portforwarding.com.
The last thing we need to talk about is etiquette, when using a torrent there is only one rule people, don’t be a leech. Make sure you seed for a while, that way everyone can have a chance to download the files. It’s like your mom use to say, sharing is good. Usually, your bit client has an option for this, just go to preferences it is defiantly in there somewhere, just set it to 100%. Well this concludes my tutorial on using bittorrents and yes folks it is that easy.
