Region free DVD players can cost $500 USD or more, but don’t spend your money just yet. Most likely you can enjoy all your favourite imports on your current Standalone DVD player. I know I can! Depending on the brand of your DVD player, just by entering a certain code on the remote control you can unlock its hidden potential to be Region Free! I’ll walk you through finding the codes that will work on most name brand players, and the easiest and cheapest DVD player to buy if you can’t hack yours!

What You Need

Brand and Model Number

To perform this hack you only need to know the Brand and Model Number of your DVD player. This can be found on the box it came in or on a sticker located close to the video inputs or on the bottom of the player, and in most cases you need the remote that came with it. Simple enough.

Imported Movie

To test your DVD player I recommend that you buy an imported movie. Honestly, there’s no real point in unlocking the region free capabilites of your DVD player unless you intend on watching imports.

Finding the Hack

Once you have the brand and model of your DVD player (and hopefully an imported movie) cruise over to Videohelp.com . VideoHelp is a excellent site to learn about DVDs, but more importantly it houses a huge database of user tested region hacks for Standalone DVD players.

Enter Your Brand and Model Number in the Search Box and Click Search.

99% of the time you will find a hack that pertains to your player. If not, just try searching for the brand name, then browse the results until you find a model number that is close to that of your DVD player.

What to Do When You Find Your Instructions to Hack Your DVD Player

Becareful in this step. Read everyone’s post and find the hack that has been thoroughly tested. If the hack requires anything to do with the FirmWare of your DVD player I wouldn’t bother with it unless you feel comfortable in what you are doing.

Perform and Test the Hack

In MOST cases you’ll only need to enter a few numbers (in a certain sequence) on your remote control when the DVD tray is open. Quite frankly, this hack is so simple to perform you might as well do it to kill 5 minutes of boredom. If you have an import to watch toss it in your player and give it a shot. If not, I recommend SPACED Season 1 and Season 2 for those of you, like myself, who are not from England.

The Last Resort - Philips DVP 642/37

If for some reason you cannot find a hack that works with your player, never fear. You can buy a Philips DVP 642/37 DVD/DiVX player at amazon.com for $50 USD. This is a popular player that you’ll find almost anywhere for the same price.

Region Free Hack for Philips DVP 642/37

1) Turn on the player.
2) Open the DVD tray.
3) Press the following sequence on the remote:

7, 8, 9, OK BUTTON, 0

4) You will see the Number 0 appear on the lower left hand corner of your TV.

Essentially, the number 0 at the end of the sequence specifies No Region (or Region Free).
