How To: Play Frets on Fire with a Guitar Hero Controller
Gaming Hacks, Windows XP, How To Guides, Windows Software, PC Gaming, Guitar Hero March 24th, 2007
Playing Frets on Fire with the official Red Octane SG or Gibson Guitar Controller shouldn’t be difficult to setup, but it’s a little more complicated than Plug-N-Play. Frets on Fire doesn’t seem to retain joystick settings when mapping the buttons from a Guitar Controller into the game. It may work for a little while, but I’m sure many have noticed that the controller setup is bound to fail. Mainly the Strum Bar fails to function during the game (which really sucks when you’re in the middle of a song, hell, or just trying to navigate the menus). This guide will show you how to properly setup your Guitar Hero controller to work flawlessly with Frets on Fire everytime!
This article assumes you already have Frets on Fire and you have a good understanding of how to change the Key Settings in the game.
1) Get the Official Red Octane Universal PS/PS2 Controller Adapter
If you haven’t already bought the Red Octane Universal PS/PS2 Controller Adapter, you better go buy it now! If you are using another PS2 to PC adapter, this tutorial may not work for you, but give it a shot anyway and post your results in the comments of this article.
2) Download Joy2Key
Joy2Key is a utility used to map the buttons on a joystick to actual keyboard keys. This will ensure that the Guitar Hero controller will not fail during gameplay of Frets on Fire.
- Once you download Joy2Key, extract it to a folder on your hard drive.

Don’t worry about mapping the keys. I’ve done all the hard work for you.
- Just Download this Configuration File into the same directory of Joy2Key.
- Start up Joy2Key.
- Click where it reads FretsonFire-Althack.com and leave Joy2Key open.
There’s no more buttons or settings to mess with, just leave Joy2Key OPEN!
3) Configure the Key Settings in Frets on Fire
- Start up Frets on Fire
- Go to Settings
- Go to Key Settings
Use the following key settings:
- Pick: Up
- Secondary Pick: Down
- Fret #1: Return
- Fret #2: 2
- Fret #3: 3
- Fret #4: 4
- Fret #5: 5
- Move Left: Left
- Move Right: Right
- Move Up: Up
- Move Down: Down
- Cancel: Escape
Using the Key Mapping method outlined above will save you many hours of struggling with a sluggish strum-bar, and hopefully the developer of Frets on Fire will take some time on perfecting joystick integration…

I wonder, will this work on the Xbox 360 controller??
April 6th, 2007 at 12:46 am
I’ve tried it, and it does work for the Xbox 360 Guitar Controller.
Just plug in the X-plorer and after a minute windows will automatically download the Xbox 360 controller pad drivers.
From there it works just the same (except you don’t need to buy that connector thing.
Thanks for the instructions!

This guide is sweet! I finally got it to work! I had to make a minor change…
GH2 bundle for the PS2. I bought the PS2 to USB adapter from Radio Shack; $12 USD. Install the drivers from the CD.
Follow this guide; complete step 2 and before you start up FOF change: AxisY(0) to DOWN. Otherwise the pick button wouldn’t work.
Thanks!
April 7th, 2007 at 5:09 pm
…that should be..
before you start up FOF change: AxisY(0) to DOWN

Help! I’m having trouble with setting the keys. Every time I set the Pick, I can’t set the other keys anymore…
April 17th, 2007 at 7:50 pm
I purchased this adapter: http://us.st11.yimg.com/us.st.yimg.com/I/hartsunlimited_1944_39629327
and the only problem I’m having with it is I can’t get the first (green) button on the guitar hero controller to work at all. I end up having to hold down start on the controller to play through the song at all. Help? D:

I wonder if this works with linux? or if there is another method…
May 10th, 2007 at 10:34 am
Ami, Did you try to change the button from joy2key, if you have to change just one button, it shouldnt be too difficult. I have purchased the same adapter, but I havent bought the guitar yet, so please post your experiences here so that I wont waste money for nothing
May 30th, 2007 at 3:20 pm
Hey Ami,
i just bought the big ben controller and the guitar thunder black ver from topway site…and i Have the same problem.
Using joy2key doesn’t resolve the problem, so now, I don’t know what to do…
I tried to find why it doesn’t work in control panel and i found that using both green and and pick key on the guitar make a different signal compare to other keys…
Sorry for my bad english….i’m french :p

Can you use the Rock Guitar 2 Wired with Frets on Fire?
September 22nd, 2007 at 9:29 pm
Ok, none of the buttons are responsive. Wtf?
September 23rd, 2007 at 7:16 pm
My adapter says everything’s workin’ but my controller isn’t responsive. No, it’s not the Red Octane adapter but it’s the same kinda thing.
September 23rd, 2007 at 9:27 pm
I would recommend going to Red Octane’s site and downloading the drivers for their adapter and see if yours will respond with those drivers.
Here you go:

Nope, that didn’t work either. I don’t get it, my regular PS2 controller works but my GH2 controller doesn’t. The people who have the Xbox 360 GH2 controller have it a lot easier. They just plug it in and go from there. They don’t have to buy an adapter or anything.

just follow the list and the guitar runs like a beauty. I have a ps2 guitar and it took me all of 5 min to get it working

well, just too let you guys know, haven’t tried the Joy2key yet, cause I didn’t had to.
got the RedOctane Wireless PS2 controller.
connected it with an PS2/USB adapter from speed Link
installed there driver (has dual shock support)
the guitar is connected perfectly, (windows XP doesn’t recognize is though)
after that, I installed the redoctane driver
started FoF and set the keys manually without any other proggy running in background.
works just great.
just too let you guys know.

I am using the GH3 (PC/Mac version) controller (white explorer) with FOF
1. Plug the USB controller in USB port and wait for Windows XP to generate an install wizard (auto-detection)
2. Place GH3 PC DVD-ROM disc into disc drive
3. Select next from the dialog box (windows should find the drivers from the GH3 PC DVD-ROM disc; if not specify the location using the browse feature)
4. With the USB explorer controller correctly installed, run FOF
5. Navigate to the settings sub menu
6. Navigate to the key settings sub menu
7. Navigate to and select a desired key
8. Press the new interface on the USB explorer controller*
9. Repeat steps 7-9 to re-map FOF settings for use with GH3 PC/Mac gutiar controller
* For users wondering, FOF key setting’s labels are:
Pick: Joy #1, hat 0(0,-1)
Secondary Pick: Joy #1, hat 0(0,1)
Fret #1: Joy #1, a
Fret #2: Joy #1, b
Fret #3: Joy #1, d
Fret #4: Joy #1, c
Fret #5: Joy #1, e
Left: Joy #1, hat 0(-1,0)
Right: Joy #1, hat 0(1,0)
Up: Joy #1, hat 0(0,-1)
Down: Joy #1, hat0(0,1)
Cancel: Joy #1, g
