Would-be PHP Developers Rejoice!

For those curious about making their computer(s) into a web server are in luck. A open-source program called VertrigoServ can make this a reality simply by installing a tiny software package which contains all the components needed to have a fully functional web server in seconds. By installing and running VertrigoServ you will have Apache, PHP, MySQL, SQLite, PHPmyAdmin, ZendOptimizer and SQLiteManager all controllable by a simple context menu that runs in your System Tray. Everyone has a good idea at one time or another to implement a new feature in a web browser. Well, with the goodness that is Mozilla Firefox, now you can do just that. You need to have a vague understanding of XUL and Javascript, but you certainly don’t need to be a master of either. When I started, I knew nothing about either one, really. I had seen some bookmarklets here and there, and tried to figure out just how they worked. Well, that’s how I made my first extension, BugMeNot.

For those not familiar with Google Hacking, it is not actually “hacking” Google by any means. Google Hacking is merely just using the functionality of Google search to its fullest by passing queries to find virtually any file (music, movies, documents, etc.), unprotected web cams, and even passwords (that could be bad)! By default Microsoft reserves 20% of your bandwidth for their own purposes (updates, error reporting, etc.). However, you can easily disable this feature and reclaim 20% of your bandwidth that otherwise sits idle.

Note: This method only works on Windows XP Professional.

1) Click START> Run

2) Type gpedit.msc in the Run dialog box. This will open up the Group Policy Editor.

3) Next go to Local Computer Policy> Computer Configuration> Administrative Templates> Network> QOS Packet Scheduler

4) Double Click on Limit Reservable Bandwidth

5) On the Settings tab click ENABLE Reservable Bandwidth

6) Set the Bandwidth Limit percentage to ZERO.

Now you will get that extra 20% of bandwidth that Microsoft has taken away from you!
